The major pollutants include the oxides of sulphur, nitrogen, carbon and the hydrocarbons.
Nitrogen (NO2, NO) and sulphur (SO2 and SO3) oxides formed as a result of coal, automotive and other fossil fuels burning form nitric acid (HNO3) and sulphuric acid (H2SO4) by reacting with water in the presence of atmospheric oxygen. This gives rise to ' acid rain. The reactions that take place are -
2SO2 + O2 + 2H20 → 2H2SO4
4NO + O2 + 2H20 → 4HNO3
