the process which involves the replacement of hydrogen atom of alkane with the sulphonic acid group (HSO3-) is known as sulphonation of alkane

it is carried out by heating higher alkane with fuming sulphuric acid

C6H13H + HOSO3H    =   C6H13SO3H + H2O

the sulphonation of alkane is proceeds by free radical mechanism

OH-SO3H = OH + SO3H

R-H + O-H = H2O

R + SO3H  = R-SO3H
