Median :

  • Median is the middle term or the number which lies in the middle of the given numbers.

Steps to find the median :

  • First arrange the numbers in either ascending or descending order. Here we can do any of them because ; the middle term will be in middle only irrespective of the order .

  • Check the number of terms.

  • If the terms are even in number use this formula :

\large{\boxed{\sf{\dfrac{n}{2}}}}

Note that 'n' refers to number of terms.

  • If the terms are odd we will use another formula :

\large{\boxed{\sf{\dfrac{n + 1}{2}}}}

Here we are adding 1 to the odd number so that it will become even and then divide by 2.

Solution :

Following the information above ; we will solve the given problem.

Step 1 :

Arrange in ascending or descending order.

Ascending order :

3 , 5 , 8 , 11 , 13 , 17 , 17 , 18

Step 2 :

Check number of terms.

n = 8

Step 3 :

Use appropriate fomula .

Even : \sf{\dfrac{n}{2}}

\longrightarrow{\sf{\dfrac{8}{2}}}

\longrightarrow{\sf{\cancel{\dfrac{8}{2}}}}

\longrightarrow{\sf{4}}

So the median is the 4th and 5th observation :

3 , 5 , 8 , 11 , 13 , 17 , 17 , 18

Now as we have 2 middle terms ; we have to take average of the two terms.

Average means mean.

Mean : add up the terms and divide by 2.

Terms :

=> 11 and 13

=> 11 + 13 = 24

=> 24 ÷ 2 = 12

So the median = 12
