Given:

Melissa purchased $39.46 in groceries at a store

The cashier gave her $1.46 in change from $50 bill

To find:

How much change should the cashier have given Melissa?

Solution:

The amount spent by Melissa in the groceries at the store = $ 39.46

The amount on the bill = $ 50

The change paid by the cashier to Melissa= $ 1.46

Now, let see what is the actual amount that the cashier should have given to Mellissa as a change.

∴ The actual change that the cashier should give is,

= [Bill amount] - [Amount spent on groceries]

= [$ 50] - [$ 39.40]

= $ 10.54

Thus, the cashier should have given $ 10.54 to Melissa as the change.
