In case of melting of ice,just solid to liquid formation occurs.One solid always absorbs heat to get converted into liquid.But no chemical changes occur in this case.Water is H2O and ice is also H2O.We can get ice from water by cooling it.So it is not a permanent change.So it is a physical change.

melting of ice absorbs heat but still is a physical change because :
No new substance formed : water is obtained which is the liquid state of water.
it can be reversed : the water so obtained can be conversation to ice by freezing
NO ENERGY CHANGE : WHEN ICE ABSORBS HEAT TO FORM WATER THE SAME AMOUNT OF HEAT IS RELEASED WHEN WATER IS FREEZED . SINCE THE SAME AMOUNT OF HEAT CAN BE OBTAINED BACK , THERE IS CONSIDERED TO BE NO ENERGY CHANGE .....
