Prior to the French revolution, the society of France was divided among three estates; First, Second and the Third estate.

The clergy was associated with the 1st estate.

The main occupation of Clergy included the special function of the Church for example fathers and other constituents of the church.

This group or this estate was exempted from paying any kind of tax; in fact, the main source of their income was tithes, which was a kind of tax accumulated from the peasants of French society.
