Explanation:
Of late, lot of talk has been going on about the recent surgical strikes that were carried out by the Indian Army’s elite Parachute Regiment (Special Forces) across the LoC in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). Commandos of 4th and 9 PARA SF were dropped behind enemy lines and the operation was carried out with extreme precision, who were assisted by the soldiers of the Ghatak Platoon. It was a covert operation. While the operation was on, Mi-35 attack helicopters were on standby, although their bases had no prior information about the impending ground operation. Inspite of such deeds of bravery and heroism, some section of the political class does not shy away from playing dirty politics even with our armed forces. In India, film actors, cricketers etc are paid astronomical sums of money and some are given ‘Demi- God’ status. Have we ever given it a thought? What about our real heroes, who guard our borders, so that we can live in peace? Are we being grateful enough? In movies, if Salman Khan is shot ten times, he will again get up and fight ten bad guys single handedly because it’s a movie and those are not real bullets. But our soldiers are fighting real battles everyday, where there is no re-take, if you get hit, you may not come back alive ! As citizens of India, we need to know acknowledge our real heroes.
The Parachute Regiment is considered the elite regiment of the Indian Army. All the members of PARA are volunteers, any officer or soldier from the army may volunteer to join but the selection process is so tough that the rejection rate hovers anywhere between 90-95% and they are then sent back to their parent battalions. The easiest way to spot a member of the Parachute Regiment is the ‘maroon beret’, as it is the universal symbol of the PARAs. Maroon is the colour of the airborne forces all over the world. The colour maroon is a combination of ‘blood red’ and ‘steel grey’ that signifies ‘blood and sacrifice’ and ‘strength and resilience’. If you see anyone wearing a maroon beret, they don't have to speak a word, as it speaks volumes about who they are and what they are capable of doing. “Men apart. Every man, an emperor” : the famous adage, that was used to describe the heroics of the paratroopers during the World War II
