Mendel studied "factors" that allowed for physical characteristics, which can have alternate versions, to be passed onto offspring. These factors are called genes.

Mendel found that there are alternative forms of factors — now called genes — that account for variations in inherited characteristics. For example, the gene for flower color in pea plants exists in two forms, one for purple and the other for white. The alternative "forms" are now called alleles.

These factors are known as allele

Explanation:

  • there are two alternative factors which are responsible for production of physical characteristics to stop the dominant character is responsible for the dominant characteristics in the offspring.
  • However If both the factors are the recesses of the non dominant factor then only the rhesus factor is present in the offspring. One of the factor is inherited from either parent
