Mendeleev had a great contribution in modern periodic table as-
1- he observed that elements with similar properties appeared at regular intervals.
2- he made easier to identify elements by dividing the table into rows and columns.
3- Mendeleev also observed that properties of elements changes while going from left to right.
This all made modern periodic table successful.
