Mendeleev placed Cobalt in front of Nickel in his table. He said that the properties of Cobalt are similar to Rhodium and properties of Nickel are similar to Iridium. But the atomic mass of Cobalt is more than that of Nickel. This is violating his principle " the properties of elements are the periodic function of their atomic masses". Is this an achievement or a drawback? I'm so confused, please help me!

It is an achievement according to Mendeleev but a drawback for us coz when he started his work not much info. was there regarding the elements. Hence he was unaware of the actual mass of the element nd thus missplaced him. Moreover in some places he had put some unlike elements just to fit them 8n his periodic table.

Hope it helps u.
