Mental health is a state of well being in which an individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with
the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.
The WHO stress that mental health is more than just the absence of mental disorders and disabilities. Our
mental health influences how we think, feel and behave in daily life. Strong mental health isn't just the
absence of mental health problems. Being mentally or emotionally healthy is much more than being free of
depression, anxiety or other psychological issues. Rather than the absence of mental illness, mental health
refers to the presence of positive characteristics. People who are mentally healthy have a sense of
contentment, adjust for living and have the ability to deal with stress and bounce back. The ability to build and
maintain fulfilling relationship, added by self confidence and high self esteem help us to cope up with many
problems and succeed in life.
2. Anyone can suffer from mental or emotional health problem. The common mental health disorders are anxiety
disorders and mood disorders. The physical symptoms of mental health disorder are : restlessness, fatigue,
tense muscle, interrupted sleep. Despite the fact that one among five of us suffer from a diagnosable mental
disorder, most of us make no effort to improve our situation. We ignore the emotional messages that tell us
something is wrong and try toughing it out by distracting ourselves or self medicating with alcohol or self
destructive behaviour. We hope that our situation will eventually improve on its own or we simply give up
telling ourselves, 'This is just the way we are'.
3. The good news is you don't have to feel bad about mental ill health. There are practices you can adopt to
elevate your mood, become more resilient and enjoy life more. Developing a hobby, enjoying social
relationships, practising yoga and physical activities are some simple ways to be mentally healthy.
Understanding the purpose and meaning of life, learning new skills and most importantly adapt to change are
needed for improved mental health. But just as it requires effort to build and maintain physical health, so it is
with mental health. We have to work harder these days to ensure strong mental health simply because there
are so many ways that life takes a toll on our emotional wellbeing.
