The revolt is not an outcome of any single cause. The discontent among the Indians for the British govt. for the past years found out it's expression in the form of Revolt of 1857.
The immediate cause that could be mentioned is--The Indian sepoys working in the British army were supposed to bite off the covering of the bullet before it was used. It later came to their knowledge that pig fat was being used for preparing those coats. This was seen as a deliberate attempt to disrespect the religion of Indians. In answer to this a sepoy Mangal Pandey under his leadership began a revolt against the British and headed towards Delhi.
