mention advantages and disadvantages of producing hydroelectricity by building dams on river.​

advantages

  • the potential energy of water at the top of them is readily available to rotate the turbine blades at the bottom of the dam.
  • available water is used for irrigation purpose also
  • occurrence of floods during rainy season can be controlled by constructing dams.
  • since the water in the reservoir should be refilled each time it rains hydropower is a renewable source of energy.

Disadvantages

  • dams can be constructed at a limited number of places generally in hilly terrain only.
  • large areas of land get sub merged design dams are built on rivers
  • it adversely affect the ecosystem of adjoining as well as downstream region

A vast variety of flora and fauna (plants and animals) get affected.

Dams can be constructed only at a limited number of places.

it creates sedimentation of rocky sand particles thereby  creating poor sedimentation which leads to the decline of fishes reproduction

Advantage

The generation of electricity from water does not produce any environmental pollution.

Water energy is a renewable source of electric energy which will never get exhausted
