- Soils are formed by the interaction of five soil forming factors. They are parent material, climate, biota (organisms), topography, and time. The different influences of these factors cause different soil horizons to form
- Water, wind, temperature change, gravity, chemical interaction, living organisms and pressure differences all help break down parent material. The types of parent materials and the conditions under which they break down will influence the properties of the soil formed.
- Four basic processes occur in soils— additions, losses, transformations (changes), and translocation (movement). A PowerPoint presentation provides some examples. Experiments demonstrate these soil processes.
