1. Broadly consequentialist arguments. On these, democracy is a good system because it leads to good outcomes. David Estlund for example has recently argued that democracy is justified because it's especially good at what avoiding what he calls "primary bads" (war, famine and the like). Clearly, these arguments rest on empirical considerations so are not wholly questions for political philosophy, they are also questions for political science and economics.
2. Epistemic arguments. On these, democracy is justified because it is a decision procedure which gets us to the right answers. See for example Condorcet's jury theorem.
3. Arguments from political equality. So the arguments go, members of a polis are of equal moral worth (this is one of the axioms of many forms of liberalism). So, their views about contested issues should be weighted the same. To count some views more than others would be to deny the equal moral worth of all the members of the polis. Liberal democracy is thus justified because it respects the fundamental moral equality.
