Answer:

What are the differences between ancient and modern architecture?

The differences in ancient and modern architecture are vast.

First lets looks at materials. Today we have special metals, polymers (Plastics), composite woods such as Plywood and particle board. We have wood, concrete, stones. These are just a few of the modern materials.

Secondly lets look at the modern engineering. This is a tricky part of the discussion as some of the ancients had great engineering. Many ancient building such as the pyramids could not be built today with our understanding of engineering and physics. But we have come a long way in applied physics and the use of new and old materials.

Ancient buildings up until the Greco-Roman period were primarily wood and stone construction. The Moors of Scotland have stone huts built into the sides of the hills. The Native Americans in the South West used local stones to create hunting lodges. An example of this is the Agate house in the Crystal Forest in Arizona. Some cultures used Clay to make adobe brick houses and again in the Southwest they built adobe or cob houses in the side of mountains under large overhangs for protection from the harsh weather of the area.

In Asia and Europe there are many examples of quarried stone buildings. Some of these are very intricate while other are quite plain. In a few cases entire buildings are cut from a single huge stone. In the case of Eastern Europe there are cave systems that were dug by hand by those who lived in them. Lavra Cathedral in Kiev Ukraine is a fantastic example of this happening over a few centuries.
