Four economic causes of the revolt of 1857 are mentioned below :
- There was a sudden rise in the taxes payed by the peasants which created a excessive burden on the peasants and indebted them.
- The land rights of all the peasants were gradually taken away from them and were given to the landlords under the ' Permanent Settlement System '
- All the traditional industries were destroyed and disrupted.
- Indian goods were exported out of the country in much lower amount.
