Four factors responsible for the annual movement of dhangars:

  • Dhangars were pastoral community of shepherds, weavers, cattle herders from the state of Maharashtra.
  • During the monsoon season, the region where they live becomes ideal for grazing cattle.
  • By early October, the Dhangars move west and reach the Konkan region which has abundant rainfall and rich soil. It moves from central plateau during October.
  • After the Kharif season, the Dhangar flocks manure the fields of the Konkani peasants who supply rice which they take back to their settlement where there is immense scarcity of grain.
  • With the start of the monsoon, they leave the Konkan region with their herds and revert to their village on the dry plateau.
