The General Service Enlistment Act of 1856 required recruits to serve overseas if ordered, a challenge to the castes who composed so much of the Bengal army.

OR

Lord Canning's General Services Enlistment Act (1856) ordering all recruits of the Bengal army to be ready for service both within and outside India.
