They are called public interest groups because they do not promote selective interests but promote collective interests.

The main aim of the public interest groups is the welfare of the members of the different sections of the society collectively and which may also include the entire society.

'BAMCEF' (Backward and Minority Communities Employees' Federation) in India is the best example of public interest groups.
