Gandhi strived to play an active role in the upliftment of Dalits in the following ways:
i) Before his arrival, the Congress had avoided raising such issues and limited itself to its interaction with the British government. However, Gandhi sought to expand the scope of the Congress and take it to the masses with the aim of social reform in order to achieve national integration.
ii) He called the them as 'Harijan', or children of God.
iii) He organised Satyagraha to secure them entry into temples, and access to public wells, tanks, schools and roads.

Answer:

(i) He organised satyagraha to secure their entry into temples, access to public wells, tanks, roads, and schools.

(ii) He himself cleaned the toilets to dignify the work of the sweepers.

(iii) He persuaded upper castes to change their heart and give up the ‘sin of untouchability.’
