Demerits of Green Revolution:

Poor farmers could not afford HYV seeds, fertilizers and machinery.
Some borrowed and ended up with large debts
HYV seeds need more water and fertilizer, which is expensive
New machinery replaced manual labour leading to unemployment and rural-urban migration
The Green Revolution was limited to rice and wheat only.

"Effects of Green Revolution:

  1. The usage of a high quantity of pesticides and insecticides incorporated toxicity in the plants. In order to protect crops from different types of disease caused by pest as well the damages caused by insects, the farmers used pesticides and insecticides at the high amount.
  2. Production of "different varieties" of one single crop was affected. It is because the green revolution programme concentrated mainly on those crop varieties which very naturally high yielding and did not consider low yielding crop varieties.
  3. As the water and soil from framing land are runned of either due to rain or through a flood, all the toxic content of pesticides and other chemicals present in getting mixed with the nearby water source and it leads to the death of aquatic organisms mostly fish."
