The names of the four provincial capitals are :

  • Tosali (in the east),
  • Ujjain (in the west),
  • Suvarnagiri (in the south), and
  • Taxila (in the north) .

This are prominent because of :

  • Centre of all political activities and administration.
  • Gateway to the northwest, including Central Asia.
  • Merchants, officials and crafts persons probably lived in all the above mentioned cities.
