Sri Lanka became independent in 1948. The sinhalese community was the majority community in Sri Lanka and hence they try to dominate the government.
- in 1956 ,an Act was passed to recognise sinhalas as only official language of Sri Lanka.
- the government give a number of incentive to the sinhalese people wearing them and giving them senior position in government jobs .The governments also made Buddism the state religion.
- a new Constitution was also adopted to promote sinhalese language and culture as Sinhala later were very concerned about their culture.
