Answer:

Significance of Mitosis

  1. It is responsible for the growth and development of an individual. It maintains the constant number of chromosomes in all body cells of an organism. Mitosis is required for asexual reproduction, vegetative propagation in plants and also responsible for repair and regeneration of damaged tissues.
  2. In plasmolysis, cells lose water in a hypertonic solution (high concentration). The importance of plasmolysis is - It is a vital phenomenon as it explains the process of osmosis. Plasmolysis demonstrates the permeability of the cell wall and the semipermeable nature of the protoplasm.
  3. While animals use turgid cells only for special functions, the many turgid cells in a plant allow it to stand straight up. Further, by lowering the pressure on specific sides of the plant, the plant can move its leaves and stems to intake the maximum amount of sunlight
  4. They are called the hepatic (liver) and renal (kidneys) portal systems. The hepatic system is important because it collects blood from the intestine and passes it to the liver, the centre for many chemical reactions concerned with the absorption of food into the body and the control of substances
  5. Imbibition is the first step in germination of seeds. When the seeds are soaked in water, they imbibe water and swell. The water is imbibed by the seed coat and then by other tissues of embryo and endosperm. Thus, the process of imbibition initiates the seed germination.
  6. Green plants and trees use photosynthesis to make food from sunlight, carbon dioxide and water in the atmosphere: It is their primary source of energy. The importance of photosynthesis in our life is the oxygen it produces. Without photosynthesis there would be little to no oxygen on the planet.
  7. Meiosis is responsible for the formation of sex cells or gametes that are responsible for sexual reproduction. It activates the genetic information for the development of sex cells and deactivates the sporophytic information. It maintains the constant number of chromosomes by halving the same.
  8. Transpiration is said to be a necessary evil in plants. It helps the plant to maintain an ideal temperature reqd for various biochemical reactions. Moreover the Transpiration pull is also said to have a role in water transport through the xylem.
