The main water divide in Peninsular India is formed by the Western Ghats, which runs from north to south close to the western coast, and drains most of the rivers into the Bay of Bengal.
Peninsular rivers are characterized by a fixed course of flow, absence of meanders, and by a non-perennial flow of water.
A slight tilting of the peninsular block from the north-west to the south-eastern direction gave the orientation to the entire peninsular drainage and river system which allows the flow towards the Bay of Bengal.
The important Peninsular river basins in India are the Narmada basin, Tapi basin, Mahanadi basin, Krishna basin, Kaveri basin, Luni basin and the Godavari basin, which is the largest peninsular river.
