• A swimming pool always looks shallower than it really is, because the light coming from the bottom of the pool bends when it comes out at the surface due to refraction of light.

• A straight stick which is immersed partly in water always looks to be bent at the surface of water, because the light coming from the stick bends when it comes out at the surface due to refraction of light.

# Effects of refraction of light in daily life -

1. During monsoon, light passing through waterdrop refracts leading to formation of rainbow.
2. When a pencil is placed obliquely in glass of water, it appears broken.
3. Level of water in lake appears to be shalower than it actually is.
