Two events that are inhibited by the intake of oral contraceptive pills are:

i) Ovulation - oral contraceptives are usually a combination of estrogen and progesterone. High levels of these hormones prevent the ‘maturation’ of the ‘Graafian follicle’ and its rupture. Hence the developed ovum is not released into the ‘fallopian tube’ and hence not available for fertilization.

ii) Sperm entry - oral contraceptives can alter the viscosity and quality of the cervical mucus and prevent sperms from swimming to the fallopian tubes and hence prevent fertilization.
