In chemistry and manufacturing, Electrolysis is a procedure which is used through direct electric current for driving an otherwise non-spontaneous chemical reaction.
Two Factors That Determine The Products Of Electrolysis
- Nature of Electrolytes:- Products of electrolysis are determined by the material which is being electrolyzed. In simple words, the nature of electrolytes regulates the process of electrolysis. The process is quicker for a strong electrolyte while for a weaker electrolyte an additional potential known as overpotential is needed. Products of electrolysis rely on the significance of this overpotential also.
- Nature of Electrodes:- Products of electrolysis is determined by the nature of electrodes which means that in the case of the inert electrode such as gold and platinum, it doesn't contribute to the reaction while if the electrode is used is reactive in nature and it takes part in the reaction.
