- (i) The countrymen thought that the Britishers are destroying those socio-customs which were scared to the Indians.

1) The cartridge which was one of the biggest cause of the revolt of 1857. There was a rumour that the cartridge contained cow and pig pieces, Hindus cannot eat cows because they worship them and Muslims cannot eat pigs as it is a haram (sin) for them. If any Hindu ever eats a cow, he would be considered as an Untouchable (Harijans) [in earlier times] Therefore, they revolves against the British government and they would not be using the cartridges anymore.
2) The second religious cause of the revolt was the forces conversion from Hinduism to Christianity. Christian Missionaries were spreading their religion throughout India and giving people bribe that they and their families will get proper education and proper facilities/necessities by the British Government.
