Systematic errors are proportional or constant to the actual measurement and so they can be easily predicted. Two sources of systematic error are:

  • Offset error: This is one of the most common systematic errors. This happens when the person taking the readings or measurements forgets to zero the balance. This results in errors that are off by the same amount.
  • Scale factor error: This happens when the measurement is taken with two different scales. For example, if you take the measurement of the length of an object with a tape made of cloth, a new tape will give you a different measure when compared to an old one as it will be stretched over time.
