Scratches on the plane surface of the rock beds as the fragments of the frozen ice at the extreme down bottom of the glacier use to rub against them are called glacial striations.

These striations are normally straight and parallel on a smooth surface, but are curved happen on uneven surfaces with protrusions as due to the deformation of the ice which gives a completely new formation or structure as it moves around the obstructions.

Now when clay, silt and such materials get frozen into the ice at the lower bottom region of the glacier, get rubs against the bed rock during the passage of a glacier, the materials get smoothen the rock surface.
