Two types of simple epithelial tissues are as follows:

  • Simple epithelium: Every cell in the simple epithelium is in direct touch with the basement membrane that divides it from the underlying connective tissue.
  • Simple epithelial tissues are generally classified by the shape of their cells. Simple epithelium is divided into four categories:
  1. Simple squamous: The cells of the simple squamous epithelium are flat and organised in a single layer. This single layer is thin enough to produce a membrane through which chemicals can diffuse passively. This epithelial type can be found in capillary walls, pericardium linings, and the linings of the alveoli of the lungs.
  2. Simple cuboidal: Simple cuboidal epithelium is made up of cells that are as tall as they are wide in a single layer. Secretion and absorption are two fundamental activities of the basic cuboidal epithelium. The small collecting ducts of the kidneys, pancreas and salivary glands all have this epithelial type.
  3. Simple columnar: It is made up of a single layer of tall, slender cells that have their nuclei at the base. Microvilli may be present on the free surfaces. The lining of the stomach and intestines is formed of columnar epithelium, which is involved in secretion and absorption.
  4. Ciliated epithelium: Columnar or cuboidal cells with cilia on their free surfaces make up this type of cell. They are found in bronchioles and oviducts, where mucus and eggs are sent to specialised locations.
