The challenges to free and fair elections are as follows —
Money in elections — Unfortunately money plays a big role in elections. The rich farmers in rural areas and prosperous traders in urban areas squander a lot of money. We also find a connection between the criminals and the most powerful persons of the city.
Distribution of Freebies— Distribution of freebies (such as mixer grinders, laptops and gold for mangalsutras) definitely influences all kinds of people. This shakes the roots of the free and fair elections to a greater degree.
Larger number of Illiterates — There are a large number of districts and where the number of Illiterates is alarming even now. Ignorance and democracy cannot go together.
Booth capturing is sometimes done at a particular polling station. If booth capturing is taken place at a particular polling station the Election Commissioner may order for a fresh poll. But sometimes they are not noticed
Corrupt practices are practised by a returning !or an elected)candidate and are not noticed. but If any corrupt practice has been practised by a returning (or an elected) candidate, the High court may declare the election to be void.
Voting on castes— It is unfortunate that voters are selected on the basis of caste. The voters are persuaded to vote along the caste and the religious lines.
No Equality for women-- The.73rd and the 74th Amendment Act lay down that about one third of the total number of seats at all state levels are reserved for women. But when women wish to enter the public life they offer stiff opposition from their parents or in - laws.
No sufficient funds — The Panchayats and the other local bodies are provided with the responsibility of preparation of social and economic development such as rural electrification, proper town planning. But the local bodies are not provided with sufficient funds in providing such onerous tasks.
Interference by Bureaucrats — The bodies make use of government officials which sometimes cause interference in the political affairs.
