Neurons are classified into three categories by location and four by shape.

(1) Afferent neurons, whose cell bodies lie outside the CNS, (2) interneurons, contained entirely within the CNS, and (3) efferent neurons, whose cell bodies are in the CNS but whose axons lead away to other organs.

(1) Anaxonic neurons, which have only dendrites and no axon; (2) unipolar neurons, which have only one process issuing from the cell body; (3) bipolar neurons, which have one axon and one dendrite; and (3) multipolar neurons, with an axon and multiple dendrites.
