William Crookes in 1879, studied the conduction of electricity through a gases at low pressure. For this purpose, he took a discharge tube which is a long glass tube, about 60 cm long, sealed at both the ends and fitted with metal electrodes . It has a side tube fitted with a stop co.ck which can be connected to a vacuum pump to reduce the pressure of the gas inside to any desired value. These tubes are also now called as Crookes tube.
