Answer:

1. MENTION 5 MAIN ROCKS AND MINERALS .

A) Making Cement (Limestone) (Sedimentary Origin)

B) Writing (Chalk) (Sedimentary Origin)

C) Building Material (Sandstone) (Sedimentary Origin)

D) Bath Scrub (Pumice) (Igneous Origin)

E) Kerb Stone (Granite) (Igneous Origin)

2. Differentiate between the two types of igneous rocks.(with examples)

The two main categories of igneous rocks are extrusive and intrusive. Extrusive rocks are formed on the surface of the Earth from lava, which is magma that has emerged from underground. Intrusive rocks are formed from magma that cools and solidifies within the crust of the planet.

3. Discuss the process involved in the formation of Sedimentary and Metamorphic rocks (With examples)

Sedimentary rocks are the product of 1) weathering of preexisting rocks, 2) transport of the weathering products, 3) deposition of the material, followed by 4) compaction, and 5) cementation of the sediment to form a rock. The latter two steps are called lithification.

4. Explain a Rock Cycle with the help of a diagram

Hot lava cools down to form igneous rocks. Igneous rocks are then broken down into small particles which are transported and then deposited. This results in the formation of sedimentary rocks. When igneous and sedimentary rocks are subjected to great heat and pressure, they change into metamorphic rocks.

Rocks are used for many purposes but some of them that we can see in our daily life are cited below :

Making Cement (Limestone) (Sedimentary Origin)

Writing (Chalk) (Sedimentary Origin)

Building Material (Sandstone) (Sedimentary Origin)

Bath Scrub (Pumice) (Igneous Origin)

Kerb Stone (Granite) (Igneous Origin)

Roofing Material (Slate) (Metamorphic Origin)

Statue/Ornaments/Decoration (Marble) (Metamorphic Origin)

Valuable source of minerals (Gold, Diamond, Sapphire e.t.c)

Some rocks acts as tourist attraction sites.

2. Igneous rocks can look different based on the cooling conditions and they can have different compositions based on the lava they cool from. The main two categories of igneous rocks are known as extrusive and intrusive rocks.

Intrusive Igneous Rock

Intrusive igneous rocks are rocks that crystallize below the earth’s surface resulting in large crystals as the cooling takes place slowly. Diorite, granite, pegmatite are examples of intrusive igneous rocks.

Extrusive Igneous Rock

Extrusive igneous rocks are rocks that erupt onto the surface resulting in small crystals as the cooling takes place quickly. The cooling rate for a few rocks is so quick that they form an amorphous glass. Basalt, tuff, pumice are examples of extrusive igneous rock.

3. The most important geological processes that lead to the creation of sedimentary rocks are erosion, weathering, dissolution, precipitation, and lithification. Erosion and weathering include the effects of wind and rain, which slowly break down large rocks into smaller ones.
