Secondary education is considered to be the backbone of the education system. The government of India, in the years 1952 and 1953, set up the Secondary Education Commission under the leadership of Dr. Mudaliar.
Defects pointed out by the Commission:
- The existing education system didn't include teachings related to the everyday real world. Instead, the system was isolated.
- The system was held to be narrow and did not contribute towards the overall personality development of the students.
- The entire education system was based on the English Language. Thus, students who were not good at English, could not have access to the education curriculum.
- The method of teaching did not contribute towards encouraging independent thoughts and actions of the students.
- The report concluded that large numbers of students enrolled in a class under the guidance of a single teacher didn't warrant the required amount of attention that a teacher should be giving a student.
Recommendations:
- The commission recommended a change in the aims of the secondary education system in order to create independent and bright students.
- Instilling democratic qualities such as discipline, patriotism etc. must be part of teachings.
- The curriculum must be also based on teaching vocational skills and technical skills.
The commission was set up to change the socio-economical lackings of the country, and to enable the development of the country through developing a good education curriculum.
