Answer:

The mechanical parts of a compound microscope include :

  1. Foot/Base : It is a U shaped structure and support the entire weight of the microscope.
  2. Pillar : It is the vertical projection and stands by resting on the base and supporting the stage.
  3. Arm : It is a curved structure and the microscope is handled by this structure.
  4. Stage : It is a flat plate which connects the arm's lower end. The specimens areplacedon this. The centre has a hole through which light passes.
  5. Inclination light : It is a joint, wherein the arm can be fastened to the pillar. The microscope can be tilted through this structure.
  6. Clips : The upper part of stage is connected to the clips. The slide is held in its position by the clips.
  7. Diaphragm : It is fastened below the stage. It controls and adjusts the light. There are two types of diaphragm, disc and iris.
  8. Nose piece : It is circular and a metal rotating part of the microscope. It has three holes through which the lens are embedded.
  9. Body tube : The upper part of the arm has a hollow tubular structure called body tube. It can be shifted up and down by the knobs.
  10. Fine adjustment knobs : It is a small knob used to focus sharply on the object.
  11. Coarse adjustment knobs : It is a knob used to move the body tube down up and down to bring the object in focus.

The optical parts of the compound microscope include :

  1. Eyepiece lens or ocular : It is found at the top of the body tube. They have got three magnification power such laws 5x, 10x and 15x. The object can be magnified using this lens.
  2. Mirror : It is found attached to the lower end of he arm. It consists of a concave mirror ln one side and plane mirror on the other. It is basically used to reflect the light rays into the microscope.
  3. Objective lenses : It is found at the bottom of the body tube. There are two objective lenses. They are connected to the revolving nose piece. The three objective includes :
  • Oil immersion objective (100x)
  • High power objective (45x)
  • Low power objective (10x)
