Hey there...
Multi purpose river valley projects are the dams or series of dams which are constructed across rivers to impound water, which is later used for various purposes such as Irrigation,Navigation, Generation of electricity,Pisciculture, Tourism etc.
Disadvantages :
Affect natural flow of running water:
1). Hence, it causes excessive sedimentation at the bottom of the
reservoir.
2). It results in rockier stream beds.
3.) They also fragment rivers making it difficult for aquatic fauna to
migrate, especially for breeding.
Affect natural vegetation and soil:
1) . The reservoirs that are created on the floodplains also submerge
the existing vegetation and soil leading to its decomposition over
a period of time.
2). The flood plains are deprived of silt, a natural fertiliser, further
adding on to the problem of land degradation.
Create conflicts:
1.) The dams create conflicts between people wanting different uses
and benefits from the same water resources.
2). Inter-state water disputes are also becoming common with regard
to sharing the costs and benefits of the multi-purpose project.
Cause of many social movements:
1.) They have been a cause of many new social movements like the
‘Narmada Bachao Andolan’ and the ‘Tehri Dam Andolan’ etc.
Displacement of people:
1.) They results in the large-scale displacement of local communities.
2) . Local people often had to give up their land, livelihood for the nation.
3). This leads to widening of the social gap
4) .The local people are not benefiting from such projects.
g. Failure to control flood:
1.) The dams that were constructed to control floods have triggered
floods due to sedimentation in the reservoir and at the time of
excessive rainfall.
Eg the recent flood which hit many in the northern part of India, due to the release of excess water from Bhakra nangal ( 23rd August 2011)
2). It was also observed that the multi-purpose projects induced
earthquakes, caused waterborne diseases and pests and pollution
resulting from excessive use of water
h. Change in cropping pattern:
1). Availability of irrigation has also changed the cropping pattern.
2). Farmers have shifted to water intensive and commercial crops.
3.)This has great ecological consequences like salinisation of the soil.
4.) It has increased the social gap between the richer landowners and the landless poor.
Advantages :
1.) They help in storing water at large amount which can be used for agricultural and other purpose.
2.)Helpful in generating electricity.
3.) Helpful in checking flood.
4.) Provide facility of fishing.
5.) In some conditions, they can be used for navigation..
Hope the answer helps you..!!
