India has monsoon type of climate. (ii) Monsoon occurs in alteration of dry and wet spells. The intervening dry spells of monsoon is called 'Breaks' in monsoon. (iii) There is variation in intensity, frequency and duration of monsoon.

CHARACTERISTICS :-

  • The distribution of rainfall is not uniform. It causes rainfall in most of the country except in Tamil Nadu.
  • It is erratic in nature .
  • It is largely controlled by orography.
  • Tropical depressions occur due to the variations of heat and moisture during the months of October and November. Whenever there is 42°C to 43°C temperature, convectional rainfall occurs.
  • The economy of India depends on the intensity of these monsoon winds.

EXTRA INFORMATION :-

The Southwest monsoon breaks first on 1st June over Kerala on Malabar coast.

By 5th June, they overrun and proceeds towards north east.

By 10th June they reach Mumbai.

By 15th June they cover Ahmedabad and Bhopal.

By 1st July, they cover most of the eastern part.

Finally, on 15th July, the whole of the country is covered by monsoon.
