The two branches of Legal system are:

It deals with any harm or injuries to rights of individuals. Ex., disputes relating ot sale of land, purchase of goods, etc.

A petition is filed before a relevant court by the affected party/person. The court may give a specific relief asked for.

It deals with conduct or acts which are recognised as offences by the law. Ex., theft, harassment, murder, etc.

A FIR(First Information Report) is lodged with the police, after which the crime is investigated on and a case is filed in a court. If found guilty, the accused can be sent to prison or fined.
