Answer:

A red blood cell will swell and undergo hemolysis (burst) when placed in a hypotonic solution. When placed in a hypertonic solution, a red blood cell will lose water and undergo crenation . The concentration of solutes in a hypertonic solution is greater on the outside than they are on the inner side. If blood cells are placed in hypertonic solution then they shrink as the water is absorbed from the cell.
