in hypotonic solution they become turgid and in sugar or hypertonic solution they shrink.

If red blood cells are placed in a solution with lower solute concentration than is found in thecells, water moves into the cells by osmosis, causing the cells to swell and eventually burst (hemolysis); such a solution is hypotonic to the cells, while cell cytosol is hypertonic to the plasma.
