Dear Student,

◆ Haloalkanes -

Alkanes with one/more hydrogen atoms replaced by halide atom(s) are called alkyl chlorides.

# Classification -

On the basis of no of halogen atoms alkyl halides are classified as -

  1. Monohaloalkanes
  2. Dihaloalkanes
  3. Polyhaloalkanes

Monohaloalkanes -

  • Only one hydrogen atom of an alkane is replaced by an halide atom.
  • For example, CH3-Cl (chloromethane)

Dihaloalkanes -

  • Two hydrogen atoms of an alkane are replaced by two halide atoms.
  • For example, Cl-CH2-Cl (1,2-dichloromethane)

Polyhaloalkanes -

  • Three/more hydrogen atoms of an alkane are replaced by halide atoms.
  • For example, CCl4 (Carbon tetrachloride)

Thanks dear. Hope this helps you...
