Respiratory membrane is made up of three layers:

(i) Squamous epithelium of alveoli.

(ii) Endothelium of alveolar capillaries

(iii) Basement substance between alveolar epithelium and endothelium.

Note: Total thickness of respiratory membrane is about 0.2 mm which is much less than a millimeter.
