The Provinces of India, earlier Presidencies of British India and still earlier, Presidency towns, were the administrative divisions of British governance in the subcontinent. The presidencies ( Bombay, Madras and Calcutta) were the only cities which developed during colonial rule.

The other cities did not develop because the specific materials famous in a particular area had lost its value in the European markets.
