The process of making soap by the hydrolysis of fats and oils with alkalis is called Saponification.

Raw Materials Required For preparation of soap in Laboratory :

--> Vegetable oil

---> Sodium Hydroxide

---> Commom salt

---> Beaker

Chemicals required: Vegetable oil, common salt and 20% sodium hydroxide
solution
When a red litmus paper is dipped in the reaction mixture, the paper changes its
colour to blue. Hence, the reaction mixture of the saponification reaction is basic in nature.
