Eggs are only called secondary oocytes after the first stage of meiosis is complete.
There is one other way that meiosis is peculiar for the development of the oocyte. The future new organism will depend on the oocyte for most of its cytoplasm, or cellular material, so there is an unequal division of this material. Fertilization is only possible for the one daughter cell that gets the most cytoplasm when meiosis has finished - the others are called polar bodies and eventually disintegrate.
