Carbon exists in two states:

1. FREE :- Here materials formed are made of 100% carbon and not of any other element. Eg. Diamond, Graphite, Buckminster Fullerine.

2. COMBINED :- Here C combines with other atoms to give rise to compounds. Eg. C exists in the air in the form of CO2 ( 0.04%) and CO, CaCO3 etc.
